Recently, DSM Nutritional Products production site in Gland, Switzerland, was officially FAMI-QS certified (European Feed Additives and Premixtures Quality Systems).
At this site, CRINA® products are manufactured according to a patented procedure. These products are specific blends of essential oil compounds, marketed under the trademark CRINA®.
The process was initiated to adapt the prevailing GMP+ certification to the FAMI-QS certification, after DSM Nutritional Products acquired the CRINA® business from Intervet International in 2006.
The aim is, according to the company, not only to be the benchmark for the industry, but also to give customers the peace of mind that only comes with superior quality supply.

Feed Hygiene - Guides to good practice
The development, dissemination and use of both national and Community guides to good practice must be encouraged. However, these guides may be used on a voluntary basis by the feed business operators.
Guidelines for the development of Community guides to good practice have been prepared together with the Member States.
On 29 January 2007, the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health assessed the following Community guides to good practice . These Community guides to good practice were developed in accordance with Article 22 of Regulation (EC) No 183/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 January 2005 laying down requirements for feed hygiene, their contents are practicable throughout the Community for the sector to which they refer and are suitable as guides for compliance with the hygiene and HACCP requirements of that Regulation. The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health shall periodically review these guides in cooperation with the stakeholders and other interested parties.

FAMI-QS / European FEED ADDITIVES AND PREMIXTURES QUALITY SYSTEM
Home
FAMI-QS Code of Practice is a public document and its content can be freely followed by any feed additive or premixture operator.
The text of the Code is designed to set out general requirements. Questionnaires are included in order to further detail the requirements. In addition it can be used as a tool for the operators and in auditing operators.
A compilation of Guidance is provided as annex to the Code. These are covering topics of special importance. While the requirements of the Code are mandatory for every operator, the Guidance papers provide information in a more detailed and practical way and if applicable may serve as additional assistance. If the operator decides to follow the procedures described in the Guidance, this will become a part of its Safety System. In case that, for good reasons, he uses different procedures, he must be able to provide evidence upon request that he is complying with the requirements of the Code as well.
Running side by side, a parallel and independent certification system that is described in the Process description document has been developed by FAMI-QS Asbl. Participation in the FAMI-QS auditable system is based on voluntary commitment.

FAQ's
The European Regulation on Feed Hygiene (183/2005) sets up hygiene and safety requirements for the whole feed chain ‑ this includes feed additives and premixtures. This Regulation also promotes the establishment of codes of practice in the feed chain.
Therefore the feed additive industry has decided to establish a code of practice covering feed additives and premixtures (as defined in Regulation 1831/2003/EC on additives for use in animal nutrition).
This code is the FAMI-QS Code of Practice for Feed Additive and Premixture Operators, a public document from which its content can be freely followed by any feed additive or premixture operator.
Running side by side, a parallel and independent certification system has been developed by FAMI-QS Asbl. Participation in the FAMI-QS auditable system is based on voluntary commitment.
The FAMI-QS Code is certified by independent certification bodies, and run by the FAMI‑QS Asbl association.
FAMI-QS Asbl is the Feed Additive and Premixture Quality System European Association.
FAMI-QS is a not for profit association (Asbl under the Belgian law), registered under #865715003.
The purpose of the Association is to manage and co-ordinate all activities related to the EU Feed Additives and premixture Quality System – FAMI-QS. The Association is therefore involved in the following tasks:
- establish, register and maintain the FAMI-QS system;
- rule the use of the code;
- set up adequate certification systems and co-ordination.

First feed mill to get new ISO standard
Gold Coin Feedmills (Lanka) Ltd (GCFL) was recently awarded the ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management Systems.
It is the first feed mill to be awarded this standard in Sri Lanka. GCFL is a Swiss-based company that manufactures a wide range of compound and concentrated poultry feed for the local market. They also manufacture cattle and swine feeds. “We have about a 60% market share in the broiler feed industry,” said Dr. Tharanga Ranasinghe, Food Safety Team Leader for GCFL.
Dr. A. R. L. Wijesekara, Chairman of Sri Lanka Standards Institution, speaking at the event said, “This is an era where we have all been deeply concerned about food.” He said that against this the ISO 22000 standard stands out. The entire supply chain is looked after under this standard, from the farm to retailers and even the packaging. “So this means that you are 100 % sure that nothing will go wrong and if anything does go wrong you can place your finger on it.”
“We’re coming to an era where you can’t export anything from this country without the ISO 22000 standard,” he further added.“We are working with the workers, the farmers to produce safe food for the consumers of Sri Lanka,” said the General Manager of GCFL, Francis Fernandez also speaking at the awarding ceremony.

Europe consolidates animal feed standards
The European Association of Feed Additive Manufactures has issued a code of practice to ensure safety of animal feed additives and premixtures.
The European Code of Practice for Feed Additive and Premixture Operators (FAMI-QS Code) is the industry’s response to a recent proposal from the European Commission. It proposes a regulation on feed hygiene, introducing the concept of hygiene throughout the animal food chain as well as the use of HACCP principles in animal feed production. The proposal also promotes the establishment of national and European codes of practice.
Harmonising national standardsThe FAMI QS code aims to ensure the safety of additives and premixtures, i.e. getting the manufacturers to implement the harmonised hygienic requirements and improve traceability. The standard is applicable to operators at all levels of the food chain in Europe including imported food.
Feed hygiene refers to the measures and conditions necessary to control hazards and ensure the fitness of a feed additive or premixture for consumption. Traceability refers to the ability to trace and follow food, feed, or food producing animals or substances that are expected to be used in the manufacturing of animal feed.
Today, regulations for animal feed and feed additives are covered by a number of individual, national standards. The new code of practice should be one step down the road toward consolidation of different approaches, at least in Europe.
Certification system establishedThe European Association of Feed Additive Manufacturers has also decided to compliment the code of practice with a certification system.
The association FAM-QS Asbl has been created to manage and coordinate all activities related to FAMI QS. It has entered into partnerships with the main certification bodies in Europe. DNV is one of the few approved certification bodies and can already provide certification according to FAMI QS. 29 October 2004Author: Cecilie Løne
